Primary school teachers under the National Union of Teachers (NUT) in Kogi State yesterday staged a protest at the premises of the Kogi State House of Assembly over non payment of their allowances.

The teachers in large numbers stormed the Assembly premises with placards at about 2 pm when the House was still in session, demanding to have audience with the Speaker.

The NUT chairman in the state, Sani Muhammed, who led the protest said they were at the Assembly to protest the non payment of their relativity allowance, leave allowance as well as the lack of promotion since 2009.

According to him, the protest became necessary in view of the fact that other government workers in the state had been paid their allowances.

“We have complained to the appropriate authorities over the issue, but nothing has been done about it. We are here to let the Assembly and public know about our plight,” he said.

However, chairman of the House Committee on Security Matter, Michael Daniel, who received the protesters, pleaded with them to remain calm, saying the House would channel their grievances to the appropriate authorities. He urged them to exercise patience.

But a mild drama ensued when the Speaker came out of the chamber and was asking for the union leaders that were earlier directed to wait for him, so that he could address them. As the protesters were calling on their leaders to go and have audience with the Speaker, a police escort attached to the Speaker started firing shots into the air causing the protesters to scamper for safety
