In furtherance of its mandate to galvanise a comprehensive and broad-based approach to addressing Nigeria’s digital technology and cyber security crises, the Senate Committee on Information and Communication Technology/Cybercrime has organized international legislative-stakeholders conference on digital technology and cyber security.
The four-day programme which commenced yesterday at the Nigeria Air force (NAF) Conference Centre in Abuja has “The Digital Theatre and the Future of Nigeria” as the theme.
While declaring the conference open, the Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District and chairman of the committee, Oseni Yakubu hinted that the conference was meant to review evolving dimension in the digital ecosystem, create awareness, expand capacity and boost appropriate synergy in the relationship of stakeholders.
The lawmaker who in a recent oversight visits assessed the digital infrastructure of some Federal Government agencies in Abuja noted that the conference became imperative in order to stimulate conversation towards helping organizations and agencies appreciate their enormous responsibility in the digital space and prepare them to adequately participate in ensuring that Nigeria’s security and economy are kept ahead of the raging threats.
Senator Oseni emphasized that “ICT has accelerated the pace of globalisation and completely impacted on life and work”, arguing that it has become the driver of all aspects of human endeavours.
He, however, bemoaned the attempt by criminal elements around the world who have vowed to turn the breakthroughs in digital technology to nightmares.
The major highlights of the conference would be an award investitures and training exercise.
“While the award investitures is to recognise, appreciate and honour entities that have immensely contributed to digital technology development, the training programme is to contribute awareness creation and capacity building,” he revealed.
