Matter of Urgent Public Importance Calling on The State Government to Immediately Control a Gully Erosion Threatening Okobo Community in Enjema District of Ankpa Local Government Area of Kogi State.
Sponsor: Hon Alfa Momoh Rabiu
The Rt. Honorable Speaker, my distinguished Honorable Colleagues; Okobo is the host community of one of the coal extraction areas in Ankpa local government area of Kogi state and presently need governments urgent attention against a deadly gully erosion surfacing in the community.
Precisely on the 31st day of May, 2018, I was at Ankpa to inaugurate the implementation committee of a Community Development Agreement between Okobo/Enjema and Eta Zuma Mining Company.
After the inauguration which held at the Ankpa local government secretariat, myself and the secretary to Ankpa local government area, Hon Khalid Adamu were accompanying the chairman of Eta Zuma Company, Dr Innocent Zuma when the convoy stopped at his instance to show us the scene of an ugly gully erosion bedevilling Okobo-Ate Community in Enjema district of Ankpa local government area.
Mr Speaker and distinguished honorable colleagues, Okobo has become a very important community that does not only link Enjema with Okpoku but contributes to the state’s internally generated revenue by virtue of the coal mining operations in the community.
Whereas the erosion is still advancing from the road side, if not given the urgent attention it deserves may end up cutting off the people of Okobo-Ate and Okobo-Ogane from getting across to each other and consequentially affect output of mining activities which shall include turn disrupt the Community Development Agreements signed.
Rt. Honorable speaker and my distinguished honorable colleagues; in order to forestall the occurrence of the above tendencies, I call on this honorable house to resolve as follows;
PRAYERS:
1. That the State Government should as a matter of urgency be called upon to direct the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) to curtail the erosion menace.
2. That the house Committee on environment do carry out an on the spot assessment of the gully erosion and report back to the House immediately.
I so moved.
Dated this 7th day of June, 2018.
Hon. Alfa Momoh Rabiu
Member Representing Ankpa 2 Constituency.
