Kogi State Commissioner of Agriculture, Hon. Kehinde Oloruntoba has called on the people of the state to embrace farming.
Oloruntoba, who was the guest speaker at the 2017 Bunu Day, backed up his call with a donation of 100 bags of NPK fertilizer and 100 cassava stems to farmers in the area. The highly rated commissioner spoke on ‘Farming As a Tool For Economic and Sociocultural Sustainability of Bunu People’.
During the annual event which featured the Bunu new yam celebration and cultural displays amidst other activities, Mr Oloruntoba took time to relay the economics of cultivating some staple crops like cassava and rice, pointing out the profit at stake for people who are willing to venture into those areas of farming.
“Cultivation of some of these staple crops in a year is more lucrative than sitting down in one office or searching endlessly for white collar jobs”, he said.
He promised to call the attention of the state government to the dilapidated roads that lead to the villages in Bunu land.
“Our roads must be made accessible for the ease conveying our farm produce”, he added.
Oloruntoba pleaded with the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Arike Ayoade, who was also a special guest of honour at the event, to initiate talks with the governor towards massive electrification and provision of other social amenities for Bunu land.
Hon Kehinde Oloruntoba was full of gratitude to all the government functionaries that made it down to grace the event and also to the organizers for putting up such a monumental show.
