Since politics seems to be less lucrative following the war waged on thuggery by the Captain Idris Wada-led administration, especially in Central Senatorial District of Kogi State, there is now an upsurge in criminal activities such as pick-pocketing, house breaking and armed robbery.

Investigations revealed that there are increasing cases of theft where the banks are situated in Okene town and this situation is getting residents in the area worried.

Investigations also revealed that many unsuspecting customers have fallen victim, losing huge sums of money to criminals each time they step out of the banks.

Those who perpetrate the crime, always lurk around bank premises, pretending to be involved in some form of legitimate business.

Always on hand, are standby motorcycles to facilitate their escape once a victim is dispossessed of his money or valuables.

A victim, who recounted how he was dispossessed of the sum of N150, 000 which he withdrew from one of the banks, described the experience as an eye-opener.

According to him, he withdrew the sum of N200, 000 which he put under the seat of his car, not knowing that he was being watched.

He drove over 500 meters from the bank, parked to pick an item from a super market, leaving his friend behind in the car.

“My friend noticed somebody picking something from the car; he thought I was the one but on a second look, he discovered that it was a strange fellow. He held the hand down and screamed. Following the scuffle, N50,000 dropped from the money and, suddenly, a motorcycle appeared and picked the suspect”.

Another victim, who claimed to have lost the sum of N750, 000, said that he withdrew the money which was assistance for his business and took the money home without knowing that he was being trailed.

As he dropped close to his house; a distance of over 20 kilometers from the bank where he withdrew the money, a motorcycle pulled off beside him and the occupant, grabbed the bag and zoomed off.

“As I screamed for help, stream of people on motorcycles gave them a hot chase but I was to later discover that they were working hand-in-hand. The idea was to build a protective ring around the criminal that snatched my bag”.

There are also cases of taxis being used to perpetrate crime in the area. Once a customer boards any of these taxis, he is robbed at gunpoint and dropped off.

A few houses in the area have also been broken into, while there were also reported cases of ritual killing as was recently witnessed in a bush near Magongo, where a young lady was killed and vital parts of her body missing.

She was believed to have boarded a vehicle from Total in Okene heading for Magongo but somewhere along the line, she was taken into a bush and killed and her vital organs removed.

It would be recalled that The Graphic recently published the story of the escape from police custody, of two robbery suspects, who, along with others have been giving the people of Ogori/Magongo Local Government Area sleepless nights.

Also, the increase in the spate of kidnapping and highway robbery on the Okene-Lokoja road is increasingly becoming a thing of great concern to the people and motorists.
