The town of Okene in Kogi State has continued to be under the siege of rampaging officers and men of the Nigerian police, who have thrown decorum and professionalism into the wind and took the law into their own hands, rather than being enforcers of law, order and tranquility.

Pandemonium initially broke out after two police officers attached to a branch of First Bank in Okene were reportedly killed by unidentified gunmen on 31st July 2015. Clearly on a mission to avenge the killing of their colleagues, the police in Okene have turned themselves into nuisance of some sort, terrorizing, harassing, intimidating and indiscriminately arresting innocent and law abiding members of the public.

The shooting spree and reign of terror by the police has forced residents to virtually remain indoors, markets has remain deserted, and social and economic activities have been totally paralyzed in most parts of the commercial town. To say that this kind of retaliatory response by security agencies in Nigeria are already becoming an embarrassment and giving a negative image to the nation is to simply admit the obvious. Whenever officers and men of any of the security agencies is killed, his colleagues are always quick at venting their anger on innocent and law abiding citizens, rather than carefully and professionally investigating the incident, with the aim of getting the culprits and bringing them to justice.

In as much as the unlawful killing of officers of the Nigerian police on duty post is highly condemnable, The police in Okene should comport and conduct themselves within the limit of sanity and the law. The Kogi state Commissioner of Police and the Inspector General of Police should as a matter of urgency call their boys to order, so as not to further ignite crisis in the volatile and crisis-prone part of Kogi State. The hardship already being experienced by residents because owing to the paralyzed economic and social activities in the past few days is totally unnecessary, unfortunate and unacceptable in a democratic society which should be governed and guided by the rule of law and respect for human rights. The police should go after the killers of their colleagues and stop terrorizing and holding an entire town hostage.
