The faction in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, played itself out on the floor of the senate Wednesday as Senators Danjuma Goje representing Gombe South and Smart Adeyemi, PDP, Kogi West clashed when the former introduced himself while making contributions as belonging to the New PDP.

Trouble started when Senator Goje who is loyal to the Alhaji Kawu Baraje faction of the PDP, while paying tributes to the late former Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Agagu introduced himself as a member of the nPDP and he was quickly interrupted by Senator Adeyemi who raised point of order to the comment.

But what would have culminated in serious crisis was immediately arrested by the Senate President, David Mark who assured his colleagues that so far as the party remained one strong and indivisible entity and that the Senate was not in the position to decide who heads the party.

Before the intervention of the Senate President, the All Progressives Congress, APC, Senators had started mocking Senator Adeyemi chorusing ‘PDP shame’ while the former Nigeria Union of Journalists President was insisting that Senator Goje’s comments were offensive to him.

Senator Adeyemi was relying on Order 53 of the Senate’s Standing Rule while challenging Senator Goje for claiming to belong to the new and authentic PDP.

Adeyemi noted that it was offensive for Goje, who has served as governor and still serving as a lawmaker under PDP platform to support a faction in the party

He therefore urged Goje, not only to withdraw his statement but also to tender unreserved apology to PDP members for using offensive language against the party.

“It was wrong for Senator Goje, who is a PDP member and who has not decamped to insinuate that PDP has two factions. As far as I know, there is no faction in PDP and to lay claim to two PDP is unconstitutional. I demand that Goje withdraws that statement and apologize to this chamber for using offensive language against the party,” Adeyemi said
