Motion Calling On The State Government To Rehabilitate, Equip And Ensure Efficient Functioning Of Vocational And Technical Colleges In Kogi State.

Mr. Speaker, my distinguish colleagues, Technical education as enshrined in the Nigerian National Policy on Education, is concerned with qualitative technological human resources development directed towards a national pool of skilled and self reliant craftsmen, technicians and technologist in technical and vocational education fields.

Whereas, Technical education contributes so much as it builds the intelligent of the students, their skills and capacity with courses raging from Electrical and Electronics Technology, Metalwork Technology, Mechanical/Automobile Engineering technology, Building Technology, Woodwork Technology Fabrication Engineering Technology, etc. Technical education is practical oriented education which makes it unique in its content and approach. They train and produce technicians for industries, they impart vital technical skills in the youths, and they help towards the goal of self employment and job creation and in the struggle towards technological advancement and skill acquisition.

Whereas, in Kogi state, despite all the glaring contributions of the technical and vocational education, Kogi is yet to accord our government technical colleges the attention it deserves. This is one of the major causes of unemployment, poverty and unabated crimes in the society today.

In Kogi State, we have four government technical colleges, these are;

  1. Government Technical College Ankpa, Kogi State.
  2. Government Technical College Mopa, Kogi State
  3. Government Technical College Oboroke, Kogi State
  4. Government Technical College Idah, Kogi State.

Whereas, these schools that contributes greatly to abject poverty and enrich students to become practically oriented is handicapped by numerous challenges, such as Inadequate funding, this has caused the turning out of “half-baked” students, because there is no fund to build and maintain the practical workshops, laboratories or even purchase modern equipments. Inexperienced and unqualified technical teachers, inadequate facilities, curriculum of the technical education have not been upgraded, coupled with the challenges of the staffs not being paid their salaries for months. This has completely sent the technical colleges to relegation and its purposes defeated.

You can hardly differentiate between a forest and the government technical college Ankpa due to its decay and total neglect.

PRAYERS:

Be it resolved by this Honorable house as follows;

  1. That the state government gives an urgent attention to rehabilitating the four Government Technical Colleges in Kogi State.
  2. That adequate resources be allocated to equip the laboratories and workshops, relevant text books and training manuals for students.
  3. That the curriculum taught in our Technical Colleges should be reviewed to meet the demands of the current educational standard.
  4. That the house committee on education visits the four Government Technical Colleges to carry out an on-the-spot assessment and present the report before the house in no distant time.

It cannot be an overstatement to say that vocational and technical education is the engine room of economic growth. No nation can develop without well equipped technical and vocational institutions.

I so moved.
