The Universal Basic Education Commission, (UBEC) has assured primary and junior secondary teachers in Kogi State that their salaries and other outstanding allowances will soon be paid.

UBEC Deputy Executive Secretary, School Services, Dr Yakubu Gambo, stated this yesterday while addressing the leadership of Basic Education Staff Association of Nigeria (BESAN) after presenting a petition about their plight to him.

Gambo, who said that he was in Lokoja, to engage the state government and other stakeholders on the plight and welfare of teachers in primary and junior secondary schools in the state, assured that within the next two months, the problem will be tackled. He said he held a meeting with all relevant agencies and stakeholders connected to payment of teachers salaries, adding that the unpleasant experience they have been subjected to over the years will soon become history.

Gambo said the leadership of UBEC was shocked about the reports of non-payment of their salaries and allowances, as it was the responsibility of local governments to pay teachers’ as and at when due.
While commending the teachers for their peaceful conduct during the meeting, Gambo appealed to them not to embark on any action that may jeopardize ongoing efforts to resolve their grievances.

Earlier, BESAN Chairman in the state, Mr Yakubu Adomu called on UBEC to prevail on the government to pay them November and December salaries which he said have been remitted to its account by the Ministry of Local Government Affairs.

He said teachers in Ofu, Omala, Okene, Ajaokuta and Olamaboro local governments  were yet to receive November, 2014 salaries and that all teachers across in the state had not been paid  December, 2014 salaries.

Among the issues  raised by BESAN are non-payment of leave bonus to teachers for the past five years,  refusal to provide cash backing for promotions of teachers within the same period among others.
