A socio-cultural group under the aegis of Ibaji Development Association, IDA has appealed to Kogi state government to construct network of rural feeder roads in Ibaji local government to boost agricultural production in the area.

The chairman of the association’s Central Executive Committee, Mr Gabriel Egwuemi made the call Tuesday in Lokoja at the presentation of an Award of Excellence to Mr Fidel Egwuche, a former General Manager of the state Publishing and Printing Company, publishers of The Graphic Newspaper in the state.

The group leader said that Ibaji people who are predominantly farmers were being faced with the herculean task of evacuating their farm produce to the markets in other parts of the state.

He explained that the geographical location of Ibaji and topography had posed serious accessibility challenges, especially during rainy seasons, as rain often cut off the people from other parts of the state.

He particularly called on the state government to rehabilitate the Idah-Onyedega road and extend it to Omabo, Uje, Odogu, Unale, Odeke, Ihike, Anocha and Echenwo communities.

The chairman assured that once these roads were constructed, Ibaji farmers would be encouraged to produce more, stressing that the people were poised to ensure the state is self-sufficient in food production.

On the award, Egwuemi said the choice of Fidel Egwuche who was also a senior adviser to the state government was based on personal achievements, contributions and commitment to the development of the land and his role in the emancipation of the down trodden in the society.

In his response, the former reporter with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN and pioneer General Manager of Kogi State-owned Graphic Newspaper thanked the association’s leadership for finding him worthy of the honour.
