Governor Idris Wada of Kogi State has approved the increment and disbursement of a 150% increase in monthly pay for the Kogi United.
The three-time increased salary approval by the Kogi state governor was confirmed by the State Commissioner of Sports, Mr Puke Anthony in the state capital, Lokoja.
Mr Puke, the state Sports Commissioner while explaining the decision of the governor, stated that the salary increment for the club was in bid to motivate the players and officials as to boost it results in the league.
He hinted that the move was a part of the governor’s transformation agenda to reposition sports in the state.
He intimated that the aim of having a club in the Nigeria Professional Football League has inspired the governor to ensure the team is well-motivated in pursuit of a promotion ticket.
He further submitted that the effort may not be far-fetched as the new acquired Olympic sized stadium will be expected to attract big matches as to avoid such a gigantic arena lie in waste.
“Governor Wada increased the salary of Kogi United as you know their take home allowance has not been that attractive but the governor thought it wise to motivate them bearing in the mind the hope of owning a premier league team.
“The governor’s motive to transform the state by promoting sports has also tickled him to invest in the team as the new state-of-the-art 25,000 capacity stadium is expected to attract some international and reputable indigenous matches and most importantly the presence of Kogi United in the topflight will see massive inflow of teams to the state,” Mr Puke explained.
In a related development, Governor Idris Wada of Kogi has also approved a 100 percentage salary increase for Nigeria Professional Women League side, Confluence Queens.
Both approvals were confirmed to have been made in February but the disbursement started in March.
