Bill on Ochadamu Nursing College goes to House Committee on Health

The Kogi State House of Assembly (KGHA) has committed the Bill for the establishment of United Evangelical Church (UEC) College of Nursing, Ochadamu to the House Committee on Health and directed it to submit their report within two weeks.

A private member bill which passed through to second reading was sponsored by the Majority Leader, Hon. Yakubu Yunusa is intended to put in place College of Nursing that will provide courses of study, training and research in general Nursing, midwifery, nursing management and reproductive health leading to the attainment of National Diploma and Higher National Diploma in Nursery and Midwifery

According to him, the UEC College of Nursing is a brain child of United Evangelical Church that has existed as a religious organisation, providing health and education service to the people dating back to 1887 resulting in the establishment of Holley Memorial Hospital, Ochadamu in 1948.

The Majority Leader stated that the bill seeks to strengthen the College in meeting its cardinal objectives as set out in section 4 subsections a-o of the proposed law.

Hon. Yunusa stated that that when the bill is finally passed, it will among others, establish the College to be headed by a Provost, the Governing Council and other administrative structures with definite responsibilities as specified.

In his contribution, member representing Bassa constituency, Hon Sunday Shigaba said the bill is a good one adding that the establishment of the College will curb the problem of admission in Nursing profession and further strengthen the health sector in the state,

The House unanimously adopted the bill and committed it to the House Committee on Health and directed it to report back within the next two weeks.
