4 Remanded in Prison for Attack on Ex-Kogi Speaker

ALokoja Chief Magistrate’s Court, yesterday, ordered the remand of four persons — two men and two students — in the custody of Medium Security Federal Prisons, Okene, for attacking Alhaji Abdullahi Bello, a former Speaker of Kogi House of Assembly.

The two students, Shaibu Abdulrahman and Shaibu Abdulazeez and Isah Tijani, 22, labourer and Isah Oseni, 25, businessman, were reported to have committed the offence on March 25 in Okene.

They were charged with alleged criminal intimidation, assault, theft and political thuggery by the Divisional Police Headquarters, Okene.

According to the Police First Information Report read before the court by the Prosecuting Police Officer, Mr C. S. Ayabatu, they attacked Alhaji Bello and his entourage, while on a campaign tour.

The report said Bello reported to the Police at Okene that while he and his entourage were on a visit to the All Progressives Party, APC, chairman in the area, one Mallam Oneta at his residence in Enyinare area of Okene, the suspects and others now at large, attacked him.

He said the accused, armed with dangerous weapons, invaded Oneta’s premises and inflicted matchete cuts on him and his entourage and damaged three cars.

The complainant further stated that the accused, moving in five vehicles, also proceeded to Inike area of Okene, venue of an APC rally, attacked his supporters and proceeded to Okengwe.

At Okengwe, he said the accused also attacked his supporters and dispossessed them of two Blackberry and two Nokia mobile phones, valued at N10,000 each.

Ayabatu said investigation into the offences, which run contrary to various sections of the Penal Code and Kogi State Kidnapping and Thuggery and Other Related offences Prohibition Act 2010, was ongoing and asked for another date for mention.

Chief Magistrate Alhassan Husaini of Court II, Lokoja, ordered the accused remanded, transferred the case to Chief Magistrate Court, Okene, and  adjourned the matter to April 27.
